Gravy
3957 North Mississippi Avenue
Portland, OR 97227

Overwhelmed with the task of coming up with just one of Portland’s Best Eats, I began raking my brain: Fancy? Dinner spot? Cart? But alas, Portland is known for incredible breakfast joints—so I began there. Stuck again—there is Jam on Hawthorne with their Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Screen Door’s Banana Foster French Toast, Bakery Bar’s peppery biscuits . . . and the list goes on.
The task at hand: one of Portland’s best places to eat. I settled on a restaurant and scramble that has been in my life for a long time. A scramble I’ve tried to master myself, forced other breakfast joints to try, but none come close. I’m talking about Gravy and their Bacato Scramble.

The Bacato: buttery eggs, whipped cream cheese, thick smoky pieces of bacon, green onions and tomatoes. Perfection. I promise you this scramble is so good you won’t be able to put your fork down; which is particularly dangerous in this situation since they use around 10 eggs to make it. The crispy bacon mixed with melted cream cheese is absolutely irresistible. Oh and it doesn’t end there—they throw in a huge slab of crispy hash browns and toast. And being the skinny fat girl I am, for a few additional dollars I add one of their heavenly Banana Chocolate Chip Pancakes.

Gravy’s breakfasts are a Portland staple. If scrambles are not your thing try their homemade Biscuits and Gravy, where you’ll choose between a vegetarian or sausage gravy. The Oatmeal Brulee shouldn’t be missed either—steele cut oatmeal cooked with fresh berries, whole milk and topped with bruleed brown sugar.
