While standing outside of a dubstep show in his hometown of Portland, OR, Ed Curtiss began to feel the absence of a human element, a feeling that electronic musicians had been trumped by their own equipment. It was kind of rough, that feeling. Over the next few months, Curtiss retreated to his home, determined to see if it was possible to find himself, his ideas, values, and fears, in an electronic medium. After hearing the initial outcome, his friends encouraged him to create more, which in turn caused him to retreat further into his home and head, thus Shut-ins.
The result is “Underwrought Works”, an album about building down. An album that is the equivalent of a door slam heard on an old jazz record. An album that embraces human error as a necessary component of perfection. From the technosexual vibe of “The King of Sandwich Island” to the emotive swagger of “Tropical Obstacles” and the near punk sound of “Troubled Assets”, Shut-ins looks for the rare moment when the listener loses consciousness of the music’s mechanical origin. On “Shut-Ins: The Syndicated Television Series”, hip hop duo Hives Inquiry Squad provides the only vocals on the album, a verbal interpretation of the seclusion required to create a representation of something that is larger than one’s self. The album closes with “Porfina”, a sprawling soundscape that uses the breaths of Portland, OR jazz singer Madi Goldsmith as drums, finally finding a balance between people and their three-pronged counterparts.
