Macklemore & Tricia

With cuffing season coming to an end, most of you have already made cuts. Some have decided the best way to achieve happiness is to drop ol’ girl and get back to single life. Others have extended the cuffing contract into at least the end of spring. Cuddling in the Northwest is necessary beyond the winter months sometimes.

So your cuffing partner is now your boo and you’re trying to balance the ratchetness of Rap Life and the wholesomeness of your relationship. It’s tough. Any relationship is, but the life of an artist makes it even tougher. Shows, groupies, studio time, and more can cause conflict with the boo thang if you’re not cautious, so here are a few pointers.

Get her involved. Being busy all the time while your girl is at home is like asking for trouble. A bored girlfriend is the devil’s playground.  Sitting at home alone while you’re recording a track may leave her feeling lonely. And then she’ll want attention from you, which you can’t give her, so then the nagging starts and let’s just not go there.

Rap Life keeps you busy and she may understand that. But she’ll still drive you crazy if she’s not as busy as you, so give her something to do. Have her play manager, secretary, or photographer. Let her star in your video.  Take her to SXSW with you. Anything.

Trust me; she’ll have a lot less time to get on your nerves if she’s busy.

Keep it on the hush…..or not. A general rule for any relationship is to keep things private. No need to broadcast your lives; flooding social networking sites with pictures, status updates, and subtweets. Things are just much simpler when everyone doesn’t know your business.

However, showcasing your relationship has its own set of perks. Just look at Joe Budden. He’s practically shoved his relationship down our throats. He tweets his every move and Instagrams every pore, strand of hair, and bead of sweat on his girlfriend’s body. He makes songs about relationships and is now airing his love life on TV.

It keeps him relevant, plus if “Buddens” had a dollar for every chick on Instagram asking for a 3some, he’d probably buy some drugs.  Winning.

Keeping things private may keep the haters and naysayers at bay, but making a show of it can drive the girls crazy and draw more attention to you and your music.

Watch out for groupies. The good thing about being a rapper is that b*tches love you. Regardless of your relationship status or how publicly you live your Rap Life, groupies are groupies.

Being in a relationship may actually attract more. It’s like as soon as you get a girl, your scent changes and they hunt you like vultures circling some poor dying creature. Some are quiet about it, trying to get you on the low. Others are bold, sneaky and even try befriending your girl to get closer to you. Don’t fall for it. Groupies are fun, but why throw away your relationship on a bop?

Put it on hold. I mean, it’s cool if you’re in love nsh*t, but if not, just stay single. Live your Rap Life to the fullest. Go on tour, party, have fun with groupies. Don’t settle just yet. Jay-Z lived like a boss, surrounded by the baddest chicks, partying it up. And when he was tired of all that, he got a DIME and now they’re living happily ever after.

Bey and Jay

Might be wise to model your life after one of the greatest. Remember, going on tour or spending hours at a time in the studio is a lot harder when you have a chick at home waiting for you. Get the hard part out of the way first and then find the Bey to your Jay.

Some other quick tips you may find useful (including those of you not fresh enough to live a Rap Life):

  • Don’t keep a crazy side chick unless you know your main chick can out-crazy her.
  • Don’t tweet, upload a pic, or update your status before you text her back.
  • Introduce her to any female who approaches you in public. Use the appropriate title.
  • Set your privacy settings so that you have to approve everything. Getting tagged in the wrong picture or status update can be disastrous.
  • Be prepared to apologize a lot and don’t expect to understand why you have to.
