18 and Buzzing.

A lot of positive things have been happening for the Northwest’s Hip-Hop community lately. Macklemore recently sold out 13 shows on his nationwide tour and performed at opening day of the Mariners game. Grieves is getting ready to release his first album with Rhymesayers and will be traveling on Warp Tour this summer. And Def Jam announced yesterday that the winner of their Get Schooled contest is Portland’s own Yung Mil.

The contests website, www.getschooled.com, said:

The Portland, Oregon native’s submission “Leaders of the New School“ won favor with Get Schooled not only for his obvious lyrical talent, but also for his heartfelt lyricism and message of hope and inspiration. Through creative verses like “Life is like a book, but you can write the topic sentence,” Yung Mil urges youth to think positively about their futures and to realize the value of education.
Today also just happens to be Yung Mil’s birthday.

“I’m so happy right now.” He continued, “My Facebook has been blowing up, everyone’s been saying happy birthday and congratulations.”

Still a student at Park Rose High School, Yung Mil was at school when he received the phone call telling him he won a week ago.

“They called me once to verify my age and to make sure I was still in school.” He continued, “I was still in school when they called me back so I almost didn’t answer it. I had my head under the desk talking to them. It was crazy. I was so appreciative and excited about it but they said I had to keep it on the DL…It’s nice finally being able to tell people.”

Next up for Mil will be a performance on BET’s 106 and Park and a meeting with Russell Simmons & Kevin Liles from Def Jam. Also expect to see his face popping up in various national publications, with Get Schooled launching a full public relations campaign surrounding the contest and raising awareness for their program.

Stay tuned to We Out Here for updates.

And Congratulations to Yung Mil on his victory.
