(Ed’s Note: Thanks to Emrance Berger for taking the time to type out the heart felt letter below urging people to take action and prevent Salem-Keizer from cutting out the High School athletics program entirely. We understand that there will be no winners in the budget cuts that will be happening within our school system in the coming years, and definitely do not envy those in charge of making these decisions.)

This week, at a Salem-Keizer School district budget meeting, one of the Budget Committee members made a proposal to cut ALL athletics from High Schools as a way to reinstate other positions that are being cut. This proposal is being taken very seriously by the Committee and has a chance of being approved at the Committee level and then going in front of the School Board for ultimate approval. The Budget Committee is meeting for the final time on Monday evening and the School Board meets on Tuesday (the next night).

Needless to say, this is not good and very scary. We need to band together and show as much support as we can to save athletics for next year as well as the foreseeable future. This is what I am asking for:

We need as many people as possible (kids, coaches, parents, etc.) to attend Monday night’s meeting –

Budget Committee Meeting

Claggett Creek Middle School

5:30-7:00pm

I am also asking for everyone to wear something related to athletics from our school and team such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, uniform tops, etc.

I would also appreciate it if we could all help spread the word on this and tell our friends and family members. Let’s commit an hour and a half of our lives to help save something that is near and dear to all of our hearts – HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS!

I appreciate everyone’s help and support on this in advance. Please let me know if you will be able to attend or if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas.
