Can’t front, I had never heard of Yung Mil before the editors at WOHM hit me up. First thing I did was check out YungMil.com which is a clean, well put together website containing everything you need to know. If you didn’t know, Yung Mil has been doing big things; from winning that Def Jam thing about the importance of staying in school or whatever to meeting Russell Simmons and appearing on 106 & Park. Around town, dude has more buzz than the Hooper Center Drunk Tank.

Now, about that EP…

The 5 song Young N Focused EP features production from EriekOTB, The Other Guys, and Jay Nari. The beats have that familiar commercial sound. You know, the type of music that people who get laid a lot listen to. I’m picturing a bunch of intelligent youngsters with excellent hygiene and expensive footwear at some club, jerkin’ it on the dance floor. The only exception is Betcha I Get Her which has the same sample as Kendrick Lamar’s Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe.

The first two songs, Get It All and Hold Me Up, both remind me of rap music I’ve heard on the radio or TV.  With Ol’ School, Yung Mil flexes his lyrical ability and gets about as close as one can to adult content without a signed permission slip from a legal guardian. His best rhymes make an appearance on Betcha I Get Her. Definitely the best two tracks on the EP in my opinion. What They Say rounds out the EP with a positive type song telling a story about struggling and remaining positive regardless of these hatin’ ass critics out here.

Yung Mil is scheduled to release his full length LP Wake Up Call this summer.
